Since mid-February, when the Biden administration and state-based marketplaces established a new enrollment opportunity,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/health-care-sign-ups-surpass-2-million-during-2021-special-enrollment-period-ahead-aug-15-deadline\">more than 2 million<\/a>\u00a0people have signed up for marketplace coverage. But covering the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nhis\/earlyrelease\/insur202102-508.pdf\">30 million<\/a>\u00a0remaining uninsured \u2014 including some of the most difficult to reach and underserved Americans \u2014 will require innovative efforts to broadcast the availability of subsidized insurance and facilitate enrollment. To that end, several states, following an inaugural effort in Maryland, have proposed or are implementing \u201cEasy Enrollment\u201d programs, creating a new avenue to enrollment through the tax-filing process.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/blog\/2021\/state-easy-enrollment-programs-gain-momentum-lay-groundwork-additional-efforts-expand\">new post<\/a> for the Commonwealth Fund\u2019s <em>To the Point<\/em> blog, CHIR experts take a look at states that are operating or implementing Easy Enrollment programs, including results from Maryland\u2019s first year. The post also discusses how Easy Enrollment could offer a bridge to more ambitious initiatives, such as automatic enrollment in health insurance at the state level.\u00a0The authors find that, while not a silver bullet, Easy Enrollment programs and other similar state efforts can help to pinpoint the uninsured and pave a smoother path to coverage, providing an important tool for reducing coverage disparities.
